Produced by the Wan brothers in the midst of war, Princess Iron Fan is the first feature length animation made in China. We follow the Monkey King and his friends on their journey to the west. As they reach Fire Mountain they are unable to pass because of the fire but learn that a special iron fan can quench the flames. However, the fan belongs to Princess Iron Fan and she will not willingly lend it to them…
Nicky Nome, a spinoff from “A Coach for Cinderella” and hero of this cartoon, rescues a treasure-laden pauper from the Valley of Jewels, taking him to the princess on a magic carpet, which transforms itself into a new Chevrolet. Expresses a caricatured view of Arab people, typical of many cartoons of the time.
Popeye applies for a lifeguard job when he sees Olive in the pool, but Bluto also wants the job (and Olive). The manager, Wimpy, asks them to demonstrate their skills in a contest. Popeye does well, until Bluto demonstrates lifesaving and first aid on him.
Popeye’s fan club sends a telegram asking them to tone down the violence and act civilized, so everyone dresses up and acts formal for a while, at least.
Popeye sails into Mexico, where Olive is doing the Mexican hat dance in a bar. He enjoys the show, until Bluto comes in and clears the bar, except for Popeye. Upon hearing of the evil deeds of the bandit Abu Hassan, Popeye, accompanied by Olive Oyl and J. Wellington Wimpy, flies to Arabia. Olive is kidnapped by Abu Hassan, who forces her to do the laundry for his Forty Thieves. Popeye sneaks into their hideout to rescue her, but finds himself outnumbered forty-one to one.
